Capt.William Alexander 111 PVITranscribed, Researched and Compiled By Ursula S.B. Bowler . . .

“Captain William James Alexander came to my rescue at a time in my life when things were in a chaotic state. His diaries were accidentally found under a pile of linens, in the home he had built for his family. There, in the original tin box he had placed them in
sometime after the Civil War, were letters, papers and diaries pertaining to his life and
travels.

In reading these papers, I had grown to love this compassionate man. He is a man who had integrity, honor, and honesty in the very fiber of his being. He never sought to be the man who was noticed, keeping a low profile. He never asked any less of his men than what he would have asked of himself. He had a great love for Colonel Cobham and after the death of Colonel Cobham, he lost his desire for the battle and sought to find peace at home with his family.

As I began this work, I felt his presence with me. It was as if he finally wanted his story told. I tried to keep the written work just as he printed it, misspellings and all. I believe keeping the work as he spelled it helps you to understand him better. I put brackets [ ] where I may have added clarification. Otherwise, I tried to keep things just as he had written them.”
